City Council Worksession 3/27/12
The City council worksession began with a discussion regarding a possible restructuring of the Public Works department. There are concerns over the extreme largess and all inclusiveness of the department. All council members seemed to be in agremment that change was needed, with the exception of Brooke Nelson who said, "if it's not broken why fix it?" While other council members seemed to think it was indeed "broken".
There was talk of a need for transparency in the search for a new finance director, including a need for public input. The city manager, however, decided to hire a recruiting company (at a cost of nearly $20,000) to find one. This is despite the city having it's own HR director.
The discussion then progressed to the vision statement of Port Angeles. Which is "Port Angeles is a unique and diverse place in which people want to live and work" Here at the Examiner we question if this is in fact a vision for the future. If it says "is" followed by a statement that is not supported by our experience as particularly unique and diverse individuals, then clearly our vision needs work.
The council decided that a survey to determine the cities vision had been done in the past and a new one should not be asked until after the big projects of the WFP (waterfront project) and CSO (combined sewage overflow) are completed. What happens if those big projects don't fit into the communities vision? Clearly Port Angeles is wandering without reason. Do we need a full time planner to find this vision? Or can we find a destination on our own?

Can the FAA and the tree lovers both be happy with a harvest-able food forest?
A new proposal is in the works for Lincoln park, an orchard of food that can be gleaned by the community. More on this as it develops.
